Description:

The 2020 Global Congress will bring together SAR Network members and partners around the world to explore the theme, Truth, Power & Society: The Promise of Higher Education in Challenging Times. Discussions will reflect three core roles of higher education: research and teaching leading to new insights and understanding, evidence-based contributions to public discourse and policy, and meaningful engagement with the broadest public good. How scholars, students, leaders, and the public understand these roles goes to the heart of increasing pressures on higher education around the world—from outside infringements on autonomy, violent protests, and wrongful prosecutions to imprisonment and more.

VIRTUAL CONGRESS

Given the evolving situation regarding the coronavirus (COVID-19), a pared down schedule of the in-person events originally scheduled to be held in Washington and Baltimore will take place on a virtual format over Zoom on Thursday, March 26th and Friday March 27th, between 9:30 AM New York (-4 GMT) and 2:00 PM New York (-4 GMT).

PANELS AND PLENARIES

We are grateful to our partners across the SAR Network who, in these now extraordinary times, have offered to contribute content to the Congress. Participants around the world are invited to join us for conversations with leaders in higher education and experts on academic freedom in the local, regional, and global contexts.

Rescheduling In-Person Activities: We know that a virtual Congress is not in any way the same experience, and we will especially miss the opportunity to be together, to share, to see friends and to make new friends. This is our favorite, and among the most important parts of our shared work together. As the public health situation clarifies, we will be looking for an opportunity to reschedule the Congress. Over the coming weeks we will be exploring the possibility of rescheduling the Congress, in whole or in part, in New York City for the week of November 16-20, 2020 to mark the release of the annual Free to Think report and the close of SAR’s 20th anniversary year. We would appreciate your marking your calendars with the possibility.

THANKS

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate together the current uncertainties. We regret any inconvenience caused by the in-person cancellation, and look forward to engaging with you virtually over the coming weeks. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at scholarsatrisk@nyu.edu.
