Description:

The Intercultural Communication Institute is proud to host our 2019 Winter Institute for Intercultural Communication (WIIC) in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Join us in Santa Fe, the country’s oldest capital, known as “the city different,” in a place the Spanish called, “la tierra encantada,” a “land of enchantment.”

We meet in a land steeped in many millennia of indigenous cultural continuities, ruptured by the colonization of the Spanish in the 16th Century—until the Pueblo Indians revolted and the Spanish fled, which is celebrated today as the first real “American Revolution.” The Spanish returned in a more conciliatory mood and further shaped this land. The impact of this admixture of cultural influence makes New Mexico, Santa Fe in particular, a destination for visitors from all over world who add yet more complexity.

Especially notable for us, Santa Fe is the home of E.T. Hall, who is credited with unintentionally founding the field of intercultural communication and being the first to use the term “intercultural communication.” Raised here, Hall credits this place for many insights that are now part of our lexicon: how we use space, time, context, and more, part of a “silent language” that can speak louder than words.
