NAIT has joined a new nationwide pilot program designed to ensure faster processing times for Canadian visas for students from the Philippines. The Study Direct Stream pilot program is a partnership between Colleges and Institutes Canada and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Annoucned last week in Manila, the program streamlines the Canadian visa application process for qualified international students from the Philippines, provided they meet the financial and English language proficiency requirements.

Trent University has launched its new School for the Study of Canada. This interdisciplinary school will bring together all existing Canadian Studies programs at Trent, facilitate exchange programs, perform community-based research, develop student internships, and offer public lectures and symposiums. The school will cover themes such as sovereignty, nationalism, health and aging, indigeneity, and multiculturalism.

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, and the National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations (AFN), Perry Bellegarde, today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on shared priorities during the first AFN-Crown meeting under the new permanent bilateral mechanism process.

The Prime Minister, the National Chief, and other leaders from Canada and the Assembly of First Nations also discussed the next steps in the permanent bilateral mechanism process, which was announced by the Prime Minister in December 2016.

Around 1 a.m. on January 29, Barbara Kentner was walking with her sister Melissa on a residential street in Thunder Bay, Ontario, when a dark grey car with tinted windows drove past them.

An object was lobbed out the window and the sisters say they heard one of the passengers shout, "I got one."

Indigenous people in multiple cities say having something thrown at you from a passing vehicle is so common, people don't even bother to report the assaults.

"There's young men, on the weekends, they will throw beer bottles at you and yell out 'bogan' or 'squaw' or 'whore,'" said Deanne Hupfield, who grew up in Thunder Bay.

"I never thought to call the police. It happened to everybody, not just me."

President Trump's full budget proposal for fiscal year 2018, to be released Tuesday, calls for a $9.2 billion, or 13.5 percent, spending cut to education. The cuts would be spread across K-12 and aid to higher education, according to documents released by the White House.
