CONAHEC Member Institution

History:

The University of Texas at El Paso is an institution on the move — and there is no doubt that “Our Time is Now.” The university began as a mining and metallurgy college in 1914 and has since become one of the nation's top producers of minority engineers and highly-recruited students in a variety of fields. UTEP is now the only research-intensive doctoral university in the United States with a Mexican-American majority student population, ranking second in the nation in awarding bachelor's degrees to Hispanics. UTEP serves a large, bicultural population located on the U.S.-Mexico border. The university’s student population of more than 18,500 students, the majority Hispanic, closely mirrors the demographics of the region from which UTEP draws 90 percent of its students.

UTEP is increasingly recognized as a model in demonstrating that a university with a fundamental commitment to access can also achieve high levels of excellence in academic programs and research. Over the past 90 years, UTEP has undergone several name changes. But its commitment to offering a diverse array of outstanding academic programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels has never veered off course. UTEP’s six academic colleges—business administration, education, engineering, health sciences, liberal arts and science—offer 81 bachelor’s and 72 master’s degrees and a growing number of doctorates. UTEP offers 13 doctoral degrees in a variety of fields, and more will be added. In addition, the university offers doctoral programs in nursing and pharmacy through cooperative programs with U.T. Austin and the U.T. Health Science Center at Houston. UTEP also offers, through the UT TeleCampus, three Web-based master’s degree programs in business, educational technology and kinesiology. The Center for Law and Border Studies develops resources for legal research, education and outreach in the region. One of the center’s major successes is the Law School Preparation Institute. Since 2000, approximately two-thirds of the LSPI students who applied to law school have enrolled in the top law schools in the country. The Sam Donaldson Center for Communication Studies serves the El Paso region by providing academic enrichment programs to print and broadcast journalism students, and continuing education and training programs to media and communication professionals. As part of the center, the recently established Ruben Salazar Spanish-Language Media Program allows undergraduate students to take print and electronic media courses in Spanish.
